European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
