Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
