Whenever a major honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
