This Satirical Thriller
The filmmaker's daring satire tackles the tyranny of female beauty and the dreaded aspects of growing older. The veteran actress offers an inspired performance as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity demoted to hosting a workout series on TV. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to an enigmatic and horrifying procedure called the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to an increasingly parasitic dynamic between the two. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10
This Agatha Christie-esque story features Keira Knightley as Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for a hiatus from writing about world issues to board a luxury cruise alongside an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her spouse, and other filthy rich passengers. But after an enigmatic female disappears from the ship one night and all passengers claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Available now, on Netflix
This Supernatural Story
Steven Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries with this clever ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their fresh home, the filming device – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The teen shows signs of aware of the ghostly being, and it seems guarding her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image in this self-referential adventure. He portrays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who accepts a $1m payday to visit a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Hired by government spies to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unconventional method is put to the test. This Saturday, 9pm, on Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest stands strong despite the lack of a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has made the children on edge. Once Finney is taken by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates the worst. But the non-functional line mounted nearby keeps ringing, with ghostly voices offering help, and the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. This Saturday, late evening, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation regarding the shamed TV preacher and her felon spouse. The actor portrays the venal Jim, who proclaims initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, yet Jessica Chastain manages to present Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, late night, on Film4
The Spy Mystery
This week's another release from the filmmaker delivers a espionage tale as sharp like the turtlenecks used by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission to identify a traitor among the team from a group of five – one of whom is his spouse. Each performer are masters of calm composure, so a delicious mind game of fact versus fiction develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
