Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these medications need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
